Every February, Americans take time to celebrate Black History Month. In Indy, there are some great events and places that celebrate African American heritage and culture that you can still catch before month's end.
Here's a quick list:
- Indiana Avenue - Located west of downtown, Indiana Avenue is an area that highlights Indianapolis’ rich African-American heritage.
- Crispus Attucks Museum - located at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, the museum features treasures from the first all-black high school in the state of Indiana.
- Madame Walker Theatre Center - this historic theatre is hosting Soul Food Friday on Feb. 24th. The lunch features independent African-American caterer/restaurant with music. You can also attend the theatre's event, Jazz on the Avenue on Feb. 24 in the Ballroom for live jazz and cocktails. Call 236.2099 or visit www.madamewalker.com for more information.
- Art & Soul at the Indianapolis Artsgarden - the Artsgarden has several more events going on. You can check them out on their February calendar.
- Indiana State Museum - Check out the exhibit REPRESENT: Art by African-Americans now – July 15.
- Indiana Black History Challenge - sponsored by The Indiana Historical Society and Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, children are invited to investigate famous African-American Hoosiers and their contributions to society now – Feb. 29.
